Terry Lorant

I feel so lucky to be doing this work! Each assignment, is an invitation to witness and record the complexity, the richness, the intimacy and the occasional hilarity of our lives and work. Every subject offers something new and fascinating.   Some days we step into scrubs and working close by as a surgeon delicately probes the inner reaches of a patient's brain (or not so delicately but oh so precisely carves and shapes a knee replacement). Other mornings we're finding the right location and setting up to shoot the brain trust of a thriving corporate enterprise.

To help tell the story of a nonprofit foundation, one day we'll be following the staff and residents of a temporary shelter and the next day we might be making a portrait at the stately home of a community leader/ philanthropist whose vision and generosity has helped to fund the shelter.   Our location portrait and environmental assignments have taken us all over the country, from operating suites in uptown Manhattan to the rural backroads of Nashville to San Francisco boardrooms with a magnificent view of the Golden Gate. Finding the comfort zone for each of our subjects and bringing out the right combination of personality, emotion, interest and humor in every situation…that's the goal. That's the challenge and the fun.

Collaborators

We are incredibly fortunate to have ongoing collaborations with talented and skilled designers, web masters, copywriters, video production teams, public and media relations professionals, custom production houses, assistants and other wonderful "creatives" to help assemble the right combination of resources for any job no matter how simple or complex. It's not just a picture, it's your story.

"Outstanding photography requires not only a good eye and technical mastery, but also demands that the artist possess, in some sense, the abilities of a chameleon. That is, the photographer sometimes must become completely transparent, coaxing the subject into behaving as if there was no one else in the room. On other occasions, the photographer needs to use his or her personal presence (and, perhaps, acting skills) to evoke a response from the subject - to bring out the emotions that transform an ordinary portrait into something quite special.

Terry Lorant has this rare talent. She knows when and how to interact with her subjects and when to magically disappear. The result? Her work glows with humanness - when you look at Terry's photos you don't see the pictures, you see the people."
